How to Keep Pets Safe and Calm During Fireworks

ro-16

While fireworks may be a festive way for us to celebrate holidays like the Fourth of July, they can be absolutely terrifying for pets. The loud bangs, flashes of light, and unpredictable noises trigger fear and anxiety in many cats and dogs, sometimes with dangerous consequences. At The Colony Animal Clinic, we’ve seen how easily pets can become overwhelmed or even lost during firework-filled nights. But with a little planning and awareness, you can help your pet stay calm, safe, and secure.

Signs Your Pet Is Stressed by Fireworks

Animals have much sharper hearing than humans, which means fireworks can feel overwhelming and disorienting. The experience can trigger a fight-or-flight response, especially in dogs and cats with noise sensitivity. There are some common signs of anxiety or distress that you may notice.

In Dogs

  • Pacing or restlessness
  • Whining or barking
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Hiding under furniture
  • Panting or drooling
  • Trying to escape (digging at doors, jumping fences)

In Cats

  • Hiding in closets, under beds, or behind furniture
  • Wide eyes or flattened ears
  • Aggression or uncharacteristic clinginess
  • Refusing to eat or use the litter box
  • Attempting to bolt from the home

If your pet exhibits any of these signs during fireworks, they’re likely experiencing fear or distress, and it’s time for you to take action.

How to Calm Your Pet During Fireworks

Create a Safe Space
Set up a cozy, quiet area indoors where your pet can retreat during fireworks. Use soft blankets, a favorite bed, and soothing music or white noise to mask the sounds.

Keep Them Inside
Even if your pet is usually fine outdoors, fireworks can trigger sudden panic. Bring pets indoors before sunset and keep windows and doors closed.

Use Calming Tools
Try anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, or veterinarian-approved calming supplements. Some pets benefit from prescription anxiety medications.

Stay Calm Yourself
Your pet can sense your energy. Speak in a calm, upbeat voice and avoid coddling overly nervous behavior, as this can reinforce the fear.

Distract With Treats or Toys
Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, or frozen Kongs can keep your dog or cat focused on something positive instead of the booming outside.

Firework Safety Tips for Pet Owners

  • Make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing an up-to-date ID tag. This is the best way to increase the chances of being reunited if they run off.
  • Scared pets are fast. Secure all exits and check fences for weak spots in advance of firework nights.
  • It’s tempting to bring your pet along to the party, but loud, unfamiliar environments can increase anxiety and risk. Leave them safe at home.
  • Aside from the noise, fireworks can emit toxic chemicals or cause burns. Never light fireworks near your pet or allow them to sniff used fireworks debris.
  • Some pets remain anxious for hours or even days after fireworks. Give them time to recover in a calm environment and monitor for ongoing behavioral changes.
